Meet the cheeky rascal of US design (pictured asleep in cabinet). In a few short years since completing his education, Tobias Wong has successfully found his niche, which falls somewhere between art and design. He is a master of customization and reinvention, and has made his mark by improving existing design objects through tweaking their functions and appearances. Take his Door Stop, which is made from concrete cast in an Alvar Aalto Savoy vase that then has to be unashamedly smashed in order to yield the result. Another item I liked was his mirror puzzle shown at Cappellini’s SoHo showroom, and his Casper candlestick make entirely from full-lead, hand-cut crystal filled with paraffin oil shown at Property further down the road. Wong tends to only produce limited editions or one-offs of his work, making him instant hot-property on the NY collectors scene. A man always on the move, he is threatening to change career direction shortly. Is there any way we can stop you, Tobias?
